Acupuncture and Fertility
 |
Su specialises in treating gynaecological problems with Acupuncture, Reiki and Chinese herbal medicine, and has recently helped a number of couples to conceive.
Whether you have been diagnosed with ‘unexplained infertility’ - or have been told that you have endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, high FSH levels, fibroids/cysts or poor ovulation - a course of treatment is likely to be able to help address these problems, leading to increased chances of a successful pregnancy. Research indicates that IVF success rates are 15-20%, whilst Chinese medicine success rates are 60-70%. |
How does it work?
Chinese medicine views the body, including the reproductive organs, as an energy system that will be adversely affected by stress, environmental toxins, inadequate exercise and rest, a poor diet and so on. Any of these factors can affect the body’s hormonal responses, leading to some of the symptoms mentioned above. In such cases, the aim of treatment is to gently address the underlying imbalances and stimulate the body to naturally produce hormones at the correct levels and the correct time in the monthly cycle. In time, the hormones that govern reproduction can be balanced and regulated to produce a healthy egg that is capable of being fertilized in a healthy uterus.
Treatment
Treatment is usually recommended to both partners. Chinese medicine can also help to improve sperm quality, quantity and motility - if this is an area of weakness. Both partners are given advice to help optimise their health and prepare them for a successful pregnancy.
In order to plan your treatment, Su will ask you a series of in-depth questions to determine the weak or imbalanced area(s) in your body. Acupuncture, herbs and dietary / lifestyle changes are usually prescribed to restore balance and achieve optimum health. Treatments are recommended for three to six months depending on the severity of your symptoms and your response to treatment. Treatments are typically given once a week for six to eight weeks, then reduced to once a fortnight.
Acupuncture & IVF
Su has successfully helped women who are undergoing IVF/ICSI treatments to conceive. Acupuncture can help your body cope with side-effects of the powerful drugs given during an IVF treatment. The effects of the drugs can be overwhelming for most women, not only physically but emotionally, so treatments are given to restore balance and support the body throughout an IVF cycle.
Acupuncture can also help to improve egg quality and quantity during an IVF cycle, thereby increasing the chances of producing healthy embryos. Treatments are also offered before and after embryo transfer to help maintain a healthy environment in the uterus. It is recommended that you commence acupuncture treatment at least two months prior to starting the IVF process, with weekly treatments thereafter.

Success Story
I had been trying to conceive for 5 years. Investigations were carried out by a Consultant Gynaecologist and no specific cause was identified for my inability to conceive naturally. I was, at first instance, prescribed Chlomid by the Consultant and took the drug for a year. Whilst I am aware that Chlomid has been beneficial for many, it did nothing more for me than create endometriosis which had not, according to scans, existed before. I was then referred to the Assisted Conception Clinic at the Royal United Hospital, Bath.
After one failed attempt at IVF in March 2007, I was desperate to increase my chance of success at the next attempt in July 2007. Having read on fertility websites that acupuncture may be of benefit, I chose Su as her practice was close to my place of work and began weekly sessions of acupuncture a few weeks before starting the first stage of the IVF process. I noticed an effect very soon, with my monthly cycle lengthening. I still felt quite sceptical, but persevered finding the treatments relaxing through the stressful time of daily injections etc. I was astounded at egg collection to find that I had produced 22 good quality eggs – far better than the 7 poor quality eggs produced in March. I had had an increase in the level of the IVF drugs in the July treatment, but I sincerely believe, although it can not be proven, that my treatment from Su had significantly contributed to this dramatic improvement in both the quality and quantity of eggs I produced. I went on to have 2 good embryos transferred and 14 frozen. None of my fertilised embryos had been suitable for freezing in March.
During the two week wait, I felt dreadful both physically and emotionally – perhaps as a result of the level of hormones in me or as a result of the stress of the process. Phoning Su in tears, I was able to get an appointment almost straight away. This, I continue to claim to all my friends, was a ‘miracle’ treatment, as I came away feeling both up-beat and pain free.
A week later my pregnancy test was positive! Being 35, my chance of this was only ever about 25%. I feel my chances were certainly boosted by my acupuncture treatment and have no hesitation in recommending Su to any woman who is seeking to conceive via IVF.
